Select a Writer for Your Research Essay: Post by 10 PM Sunday.

Please post for our Monday, May 4 class, so I know which writers you are choosing.  (Post by 10 PM on May 3!).

Instructions: Your second essay is meant to give you research practice in literary/biographical criticism. You will look for articles about an author whose writing we have studied this semester.  Your blog post should include the following:

1.  Name the writer you are going to research and briefly describe what ideas, themes, even techniques the writer uses, which appeal to you. Begin to think about a claim you want to make/explore about this writer.

2.  Do initial biographical research--look especially to see if the writer has a website and/ or, if living, recent interviews. NO WIKIPEDIA (though you may use links from that source, which lead to valid academic sources).

3. Do at least one search through the LaGuardia library: articles in our databases, English and World Literature, Academic Search Complete or JSTOR.  Put into your search your author's name and title of story, play or poem we studied.

4.  State title of article and author relevant to this writer and briefly explain what article is about.

On Monday I will hand out a “map” with instructions on how to put the essay together.  For now I just want to see your IDEAS and SOURCES!

I WILL COLLECT A HARD COPY OF THIS ASSIGNMENT ON MAY 13.  THE BLOG IS TO GET YOU STARTED, AND SO WE CAN DISCUSS YOUR CHOICES DURING MONDAY’S CLASS.

Blog #8: "How to Tame a Wild Tongue"

Gloria Anzaldua’s essay is suitably titled “How to Tame a Wild Tongue.”  Find a quote (or two) from the essay and discuss how it reflects this tongue taming, that is so central to her discussion of language, gender and identity.

Blog #5: "The Gilded Six Bits"

Irony is an important literary device.  On a very basic level it is a difference between the appearance of a situation and the reality.

Find an example of irony in “The Gilded Six Bits” and discuss it briefly.

Please Choose your Story for Essay #1 and Post Comment Here

1.  Review essay handout guidelines
2.  Choose a story that you find interesting and intriguing.
3.  Choose a specific theme or explore in detail the setting, symbolism, or characters. It is fine if your essay includes more than one of these categories.
4.  Make a list of scenes or moments in the story, which you could use to develop your essay’s theme or focus.
5.  Create a thesis--a claim you are making and will support with these examples.

In this blog, tell your classmates what story you are going to work on, and state your thesis. Also try to list examples so your classmates can see how you are approaching your topic and HELP you develop some of your ideas.  REPLY TO ONE ANOTHER’S IDEAS ON THE BLOG!
