According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, irreverent means "having or showing a
lack of respect for someone or something that is usually treated with respect." Discuss how Clemencia, the narrator of “Never
Marry a Mexican” is irreverent. Cite or
quote an example of her irreverence.
Clemencia was irreverent to almost every and anything around her, there are many times that she carried her antics and not care at all. For her it was more of an art and way to satisfy her needs but at the same time she did not believe that no man was worthy enough to love wholeheartedly. That was her justifiable means of doing what she wanted with other men. Clemencia states, "Not a man exists who hasn't disappointed me, whom I could trust to love the way I've loved" and to her if they can disappoint the one's they are married to then they will disappoint her as well. She has no respect towards the family values and the whole idea of marriage in general. With that being said, she does whatever she pleases with no regards because for her, no man will ever prove her wrong to reconsider the lifestyle she lives.
ReplyDeleteClemencia was definitely a devious woman who had lack of respect for people. She made her self feel good when she slept with other women husbands. one of the most irreverent parts in the story is when she called the father in the middle of the night and when his wife answered the phone she asked to speak to him then laughed out loud. Clearly the reason why she was this way towards relationships and marriages because she seen the way her mother did her father during his last months and years of his life when he fell sick. After that she had no respect for relationships nor women in general
DeleteIn "Never Marry a Mexican", The narrator, Clemencia depicts her irreverence for the institution of marriage and motherhood, through various different incidents. Her seemingly apathetic (seemingly because she does actually care) view on the two subjects is brought about by her mother's infidelity towards her dying father. "That man she met at work,... who she was seeing even when my father was sick. Even then. Thats what i can't forgive." She clearly displays her irreverence for her mother by stating that she was as good as dead, and also just generally on motherhood, when she states that "It's always given me a bit of crazy joy to be able to kill those women like that, without their knowing it." which was in reference to herself being in bed with their husbands while they were in labor in the hospital. and by that she is not only showing her little regard for the idea of motherhood in general but also her lack of faith in relationships.

DeleteIn "never Marry a Mexican''. Clemencia portrays her irreverence for marriage numerous times in the story. In the beginning of the story she says " I've witnessed their infidelities and I've helped them to it..I'm guilty of having caused deliberate pain to other women, I'm vindictive and cruel, and I'm capable of anything." Another time she showed irreverence was when she went out drinking and called Drew's home, spoke to his wife and then made fun of the wife to Drew. After that, she slept with him one last time and she planted gummy bears in the house, in places she knows the wife will see. Finally, to add insult to injury, she begins sleeping with the son of the man who was cheating on his wife with her in hopes of making him fall in love with her like she fell in love with his dad.
ReplyDeleteIn the story "Never Marry a Mexican", Clemencia portrays irreverence throughout the whole story. "It's always given me a bit of crazy joy to be able to kill those women like that, without their knowing it." She didn't care that she would hurt these women by sleeping with their husbands. Everything she did was out of spite and wanted to hurt everyone else.
ReplyDeleteClemencia was irreverent throughout the story. One quote in particular (later on in the story) she says :"Sometimes all humanity strikes me as lovely. I just want to reach out and stroke someone, and say There, there, it’s all right, honey. There, there, there” But she does it in all the wrong ways, by seducing married men, especially her lovers teenage son. Has she no shame as a woman?
ReplyDeleteIn the story "Never Marry a Mexican" by Sandra Cisneros a woman named Clemencia who is the narrator seems to be irreverent. She is a woman who experienced her family's culture and remembered what happened with her parents and her affair with a married man. The reason why she is irreverent is because of the way she was describing her affair with Drew and how much she hated his wife. Also it was disrespectful when she explained that while Drew's wife was in the hospital giving birth she was too busy having sex with him. This right here shows her being irreverent towards the relationship of Drew and his wife and it demonstrates how much Clemencia loves Drew and she would have him by her side no matter what. Not only does she want to break up Drew's marriage but she tends to do anything for Drew's son who is from his wife so she can gain the little boy's love which would lead her closer to Drew's love. For example when she says "I slept with this boy, their son. To make the boy love me the way I love his father. To make him want me, hunger, twist in his sleep, as if he'd swallowed glass"(Cisneros 66). By her stating this it proves how she would do whatever it takes to have Drew and she would rather be disrespectful towards his son and wife than actually having consideration at the fact that she can't have him because he has a well going marriage that she doesnt seem to have.
ReplyDeleteIn the story “Never Marry a Mexican” the narrator is women who has experienced a lot such as family culture, dealing with what happen to her parents and her own affair with a married man. Clemencia is an irreverent because throughout the story she talks about her affair with Drew and how much he hated his wife. Another way I feel like she is irreverent and doesn't have compassion is when she says that when Drew’s wife was giving birth in the hospital she was to busy having sex with Drew. I find this so disrespectful and rude from her part. She really loves Drew because she would anything to keep him there with her and she would do anything for him because she doesn't care if he has a son with his wife. She says “I sleep with this boy, their son. To make the boy love me the way I love his father.”(66) Here we can see that she would do anything so her relationship with Drew gets even closer so she won't lose the man that she madly in love with. By her showing that she cares about his son then that will make Drew see her feeling towards him.
ReplyDeleteAn example of irreverence by Clemencia in "Never Marry a Mexican" is the scene of the gummy bear incident. "I went over to where I'd left my backpack, and took out a bag of gummy bears I'd bought. And while he was banging pots, I went around the house and left a trail of them in places I was she would find them." (Page 65) She would put them in her makeup organizer, in her nail polishes, smudged them in lipsticks, and babushka dolls. She even put one in each doll and the tiny one she took and dropped it in a muddy creek. I believed that she does this to get the wife suspicious about the husband's true nature. So she puts these gummy bears in every single place the wife and only the wife could possibly find them. She wants the husband to second guess the marriage. Leading to curiosity and mess up the marriage.
ReplyDelete"And it's not the last time I've slept with a man the night his wife is birthing a baby." (63) is an illustration of irreverence given by Clemencia. Clemencia clearly has no regard and respect toward the institution of marriage let alone the beginning state of family. She has no morals nor high regards for these woman in whom she "causes deliberate pain."(59)
ReplyDeleteIn "Never Marry a Mexican," Clemencia, is disrespectful and cruel. Besides sleeping with a married man Drew, she sleeps with his son to get get back at him. "I slept with this boy, their son. To make the boy love me the way I love his father. To make him want me, hunger, twist in his sleep, as if he'd swallowed glass"(Cisneros 66). What I don't understand, why did she stayed single the whole time, Drew's son is growing up to get back at Drew. She is delusional thinking she is in total control of Drew's marriage. Claiming the wife is pregnant because she allowed it. Sleeping with Drew while the wife is giving birth on the couples bed is another disrepectful sign. Throughout the entire story she is irreverent.
ReplyDeleteIn "Never Marry a Mexican," the narrator Clemencia is what I call heartless. She uses her relationship with past men and past experiences with men to justify her reason for sleeping with married men. Not only did she sleep with Drew who was a married man she also sleeps with his son. She explains, "I sleep with this boy, their son. To make the boy love me the way I love his father" (66). This is the same boy that she explain earlier that while he was being born in the hospital she laid down in bed with his father. Because Drew ended ties with her she went to go sleep with his son so she can feel him through his son. I guess if she can't get the father she would try to get the son. She is unstable, cruel, disrespectful, and just what we call a "hoe".
ReplyDeleteThere are many different ways in which Clemencia shows a lack of care for things that society holds as important or sacred I would say that she definitely shows irreverence towards marriage and the meaning of marriage. There is one specific quote that really stuck out to me where she says how she enjoys to sleep with married men, specially when their wives are giving birth "why do that? it's always given me a bit of crazy joy to be able to kill those women like that, without their knowing it."
ReplyDeleteIn the story " Never Marry a Mexican " by Sandra Cisneros; The narrator is irreverent. it seems that the environment and her nurturing as a child affected her enormously to the point of lacking of morality. There is a lack of respect towards the wife of the man she is having an affair with as well as with the child of her lover. In the following quotes is the evidence :
ReplyDelete" All i know is that I was sleeping with your father the night you were conceived , I was sleeping with your father and didn't give a damn about that woman, your mother."
another example is when she called at a very late time in the night:
" I want to talk to Drew , just a moment , she said with the most polite drawing-room English. Just a moment. I laughed about her for weeks . What a stupid ass to pass the phone over to the lug asleep beside her." another example :" That dumb bitch of a wife of yours, I said and thats all I could manage. That stupid stupid stupid. No Mexican women would react like like that".
All of this is just a fraction of her twisted irreverent mind. Here is a very outrageous example of her irreverence: "I think of that woman , and I cant see a trace of my lover in this boy, as if she conceived him by the immaculate conception.I sleep with this boy , their son. To make the boy love me the way I love his father. To make him want me ,hunger , twist in his sleep , as if he had swallowed glass.
The previous quotes are examples of Irreverence. Matrimony , little children , ethnicity and manners are important for the well being of society. The narrator plays the role of somebody unethical and morality.
