Select a Writer for Your Research Essay: Post by 10 PM Sunday.

Please post for our Monday, May 4 class, so I know which writers you are choosing.  (Post by 10 PM on May 3!).

Instructions: Your second essay is meant to give you research practice in literary/biographical criticism. You will look for articles about an author whose writing we have studied this semester.  Your blog post should include the following:

1.  Name the writer you are going to research and briefly describe what ideas, themes, even techniques the writer uses, which appeal to you. Begin to think about a claim you want to make/explore about this writer.

2.  Do initial biographical research--look especially to see if the writer has a website and/ or, if living, recent interviews. NO WIKIPEDIA (though you may use links from that source, which lead to valid academic sources).

3. Do at least one search through the LaGuardia library: articles in our databases, English and World Literature, Academic Search Complete or JSTOR.  Put into your search your author's name and title of story, play or poem we studied.

4.  State title of article and author relevant to this writer and briefly explain what article is about.

On Monday I will hand out a “map” with instructions on how to put the essay together.  For now I just want to see your IDEAS and SOURCES!

I WILL COLLECT A HARD COPY OF THIS ASSIGNMENT ON MAY 13.  THE BLOG IS TO GET YOU STARTED, AND SO WE CAN DISCUSS YOUR CHOICES DURING MONDAY’S CLASS.

  1. 1. The name of the Author that I am going to research is Jamaica Kincaid who wrote “Girl”
    · Themes that she presents in the story “Girl” are woman and its relation to feminity, sexual identity in the content of social construction of gender, traditions and customs in the dos and don’ts and lastly society and class.
    · The style of writing she uses is repetition and run on sentences.
    · Another is the tone in which the themes are said in, such as authoritative, defensive, and display of insecurity.
    · Some techniques that Jamaica Kincaid uses is literary elements.

A possible claim that I will like to explore about the author is whether or not she experienced everything she had written in "Girl". The experiences that she went through that led her to write such short story.

    2. I found an official website of Jamaica Kincaid –
    http://core.ecu.edu/engl/deenas/caribbean/kincaid.htm

    3. Library database search: http://eds.a.ebscohost.com.rpa.laguardia.edu:2048/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?sid=3efb59d5-74cb-4b9b-82fc-619c2a415d33%40sessionmgr4005&vid=5&hid=4202

    4. The title of the academic Journal (since there was no article) is called "Performance and the Gendered Body in Jamaica Kincaid's Girl and Oonya Kenpadoo's Buxtons Spice. The academic journal goes on in detail to explore how in the Story "Girl" all that is mandated from a girl to learn and how to do is simply a reiteration that ties gender and performance together.

  2. I'm going to base my research on Zora Neale Hurston, and discuss her concentration on intra-racial unions. Hurston uses a lot of dialect in her works that gives her writings authentic character.

  3. The author that I chose to write about is Maya Angelou. I wanna focus mostly on Phenomenal Woman and the ideas that she had about women, what were her motives behind writing this poem. I also wanna talk about how other woks by her and how they are similar in any way to Phenomenal woman.

  4. The author I will be focusing on is Tillie Olsen who wrote the story "Tell me a Riddle". I will be interested in focusing on her feminist beliefs and the way in which sh valued women rights. The story focuses on the relationship between the author and her daughter and how it unfolds. I will also explore the background of her life and how they influenced her writings and style of writing.

  5. The author I would like to write about is Maya Angelou. I may not write about Phenomenal Woman. I'm not sure yet, I like the poem and I'm a big fan of Maya Angelou but I'd like to write about her other work too. When she wrote stories or poems her work reflected on the different social and cultural worlds she had to navigate through. Her writing style, while sometimes was straightforward could also be complex. Sometimes she'd write in normal four line stanzas with rhyme and rhythm and sometimes she didn't. I chose her because she overcame a lot to get where she was. She was raped at the age of 7 and stopped talking for a really long time, she only spoke to her older brother. An article I read said "Although she never attended college, her gift with words was ultimately recognized by more than 50 honorary degrees and an endowed university professorship, not to mention a permanent legacy in the minds and classrooms of the nation." I would like to go write about her life and what influenced her writing.

  6. Well the author that I am thinking of doing is Julia Alvarez or Maya Angelou since are very famous poets that I like a lot. I don't know yet what poems I will use in my research paper. But I would also like to use other poems in my research paper others than the ones me discuss in class. I read a poem on Juila Alvarez last semester that I really like because in this poem she compares herself to her mother and the way her mother wanted her to be it talks about what she went though in her life...

  7. The author I would like to write about would either Julia Alvarez or Gloria Anzuldua because I really connected with their perspectives on identity and how you lose your native language while learning. The struggle to learn a new language while keeping in touch with your native language.

  8. I am divided between Maya Angelou or Sandra Cisneros. It is has been easier to find info on Angelou on the library databases but Cisneros is more of a mystery. I want to write about Cisneros' moral compass and how it differs from society in her poem Loose Woman.

  9. I believe I will do my research on Sandra Cisneros. I like her strong attitude and the way she makes the woman out to be different than how society sees and feel about women. Though I am a man I really like and believe in his ideal of a woman who is strong and do what she wants to do instead of assimilating to society norms

  10. The author I decided to do is Sandra Cisneros. I love her attitude and how she doesn't care what anyone thinks of her. She is a feminist and I am a fan of her work.
One of the resources I will use is her website:
    http://www.sandracisneros.com/bio.php

I will also use LaGuardia's library database.

  11. The author I would like to research about is Julia Alvarez. I love her style of writing when it comes to poetry. She connects her own ideas involving her heritage to themes like displacement and search for identity in her novels and poetry. Some resources I will be using are:
    1)http://www.juliaalvarez.com/
    2)http://www.biography.com/people/julia-alvarez-185850

  12. The author I am writing about is Maya Angelou. She is a popular writer and I love her work. I never did research on her so doing this is going to be pretty interesting. I really enjoyed reading and will focus on the Phenomenal Woman poem.
